Events The new epoch of diary cattle-breeding development in Armenia…12-12-2008 Today diary cattle-breeding in Armenia, in contrast to many foreign countries, is developing with weak speed. Farmers, during their usual work, face with ordinary problems such as feed shortage, insufficient conditions for cattle maintenance, law yield of milk, etc. All these problems are tightly interrelated and demand complex solutions. For example more widespread type of livestock in Armenia Caucasian brown, which we “inherited” from Soviet times, gives in average 1400 kg of milk in the whole period of lactation. This indicator is not high and to raise it without feeding the animal fill is impossible as the “limit of milk production” lies in the nature itself and nature has limited genetic potential.Effective development of diary livestock is possible only through raising the productivity of cows and implementation of agricultural technologies that provide substantial reduction of costs, labor during animal keeping and maintenance. The main constituent parts of this procedure are high level of selective-pedigree labor and growth of feeding. Exactly such solution of problem of low yield of milk and consequently development of diary livestock in Armenia “Ashtarak-Kat” Company has selected. Together with the Center of Agribusiness and Rural development (CARD) the “Association of Milk Production” Consumers’ Cooperative (created by “Ashtarak-Kat” CJSC) began realization of joint program of artificial seeding of the cattle in the farmsteads of the regions Shirak, Syuniq, Lori and Gegharquniq. The sense is raising new types of livestock that will permit to use intensively valuable pedigree milk producers (Simmental, Jersey,Holstein and Brown Swiss) that are proved by posterity quality, for quick improvement of agricultural animal’s pedigree quality. The first positive results of artificial seeding of the cattle are received in the farmsteads of Gorayq, Tsxuk, Sarnakunq and Gavar. This means that during 10 years with the “clearance” of animals’ gene pool the indicator of yield of milk raised from 4000 to 5000kg in the period of lactation. And this is a considerable indicator that can really impact on the development of both milk production and economics in our country in the whole.
